Top Gun: Pre-Race Briefings

The competitive growth of our GL52 Fleet can be directly attributed to the unique opportunity teams have to connect with coaches, experts, race data and each other at daily pre-race briefings. Thanks to support fromย Quantum Sailing, the GL52 team provides a Coaching & Briefing program thatย elevates the performance of all boats, making for better racing throughout the entire fleet.

At each regatta, GL52 coaches and technical experts closely follow the daily action on the race course gathering real-time data, images and drone footage focused on starts and mark-roundings.

At each regatta, GL52 coaches and technical experts closely follow the daily action on the race course gathering real-time data, images and drone footage focused on starts and mark-roundings.

The resulting photos, videos and data are compiled and shared with owners, tacticians and key team members in next-day, pre-race briefings that provide perspective on everything from sail trim to tactics. By sharing technical information and observations on a daily pre-race basis, the knowledge and skill level of every team is improved.

At the briefings, coaches show comparative photos of rig tune, sail trim, and explore the sailorsโ€™ decision-making process for specific choices. The PRO and technical team share information and answer questions, a weather briefing is provided and our on-the-water umpire reviews calls from the previous day. This timely feedback provides invaluable insight for the day ahead while empowering each team to adjust and improve throughout the regatta.

The tremendous growth of this program is attributed to the level of expertise provided by our technical team and coaches. Among them are Quantum Racing coach James Lyne and Farley Fontenot, an expert sail maker and former coach of Quantum Racingโ€™s Melges 32.

At times, we invite community partners to attend our briefings to learn about grand prix racing and meet our sailors. Itโ€™s a great way to educate and inspire community sailors to a higher level of racing. At our Little Traverse Cup event in mid-August, we invited several Little Traverse Sailors to join us one morning. Afterwards, one LTS sailor, Allie Keffer commented to her mom, โ€œ[that] briefing was like Top Gun!โ€

Comments like Allieโ€™s remind us how unique the GL52 fleet is; through our pre-race briefings, teams at every level are able to discuss and learn from each other elevating the level of competition throughout.

A Big Thank you to Quantum Sails for their generous support of our Coaching & Briefing program and all the assets it takes to capture the photos, videos and data.
